Smokey (aka John) Hatch



Smokey (aka John) Hatch of Worthington, passed away on February 12 at Cooley Dickinson Hospital after a long illness. Carol Myrick, his significant other of 34 years, was at his side. He is survived by step daughter Amy Sorenson and 3 grandchildren; Shane, Nick and Colin of Wisconsin and many cousins from the Eastern MA area. Smokey was predeceased by his parents John and Mildred (MacFarland) Hatch of Malden, MA. Smokey grew up in Wakefield, MA then moved to western MA in 1969.


Smokey worked for Bannish Lumber in Chester as a sawyer for 35 years.  He was the coach for the Women’s Softball League in Worthington for 20 years and was an avid fan of the UCON Women’s Basketball Team.  Smokey loved life itself including people, vacations in Maine, fine dining, reading, music,  being outside, cross country skiing and planting many flowers every spring.  At Christmas time he couldn’t wait to decorate the yard with Christmas lights for the pleasure of townspeople driving by.  He enjoyed lighting up the sky with fireworks on 4th of July and News Year’s Eve.


A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 28, 2020 at the Rapid’s in Huntington, MA at 12:00 noon.  Memorial donations may be made to the Hilltown Community Ambulance, 1 Bromley Road, Huntington,MA 01050 or Worthington Fire and Rescue, 51 Huntington Road, Worthington, MA 01098.


The Williamsburg Funeral Home was entrusted with his arrangements.
