Ronald “Top” Harrop 1948-2026

Ronald “Top” Harrop, 78, of Granby, MA, passed away unexpectedly on March 17, 2026. Born on February 12, 1948, in Holyoke, MA, he was the son of the late William Harrop Sr. and Margaret (Bernier) Harrop.

Ronald grew up working side-by-side with his brothers in the family construction business. While life eventually took them on separate paths, the years they spent building and working together remained a defining part of Ronald's history and the Harrop family legacy.

A man of profound discipline and service, Ronald dedicated over 34 years to the United States Army, retiring as a proud First Sergeant. His distinguished career spanned the Vietnam, Cold War, Gulf War, and War on Terror eras, during which he served in Communications, Infantry, and as a Motor Transportation Operator. Ronald "lived and breathed" everything Army; he was a leader who was fiercely devoted to his troops and always willing to sacrifice for those he led.

Following his military retirement, Ronald continued to serve his community as a Cemetery Commissioner and a member of the Planning Board for the Town of Granby. A true First Sergeant to the end, Ronald was known for his unfiltered directness and never hesitated to speak his mind. Yet, beneath that tough exterior was a heart of immense selflessness; he consistently placed the needs of others above his own, living a life of quiet sacrifice for his country and those he loved. He also had a deep love for animals, both domestic and wild.

When he wasn’t in uniform or serving the town, Ronald could often be found at local flea markets and swap meets with his best friend, Jerry Torrell, with whom he shared a passion for working on cars. He also cherished his regular lunches and dinners with his dear friend, Sylvia.

Though Ronald had no biological children, his life was defined by the profound bonds of the family he chose. He leaves a legacy of devotion in his 'son,' Derek Hughes, and Derek's wife, Jaimie of Dexter, NY. His greatest joy was his role as 'Papa Top' to Emma (Hughes) Keighley and Gracie Hughes of Dexter, NY, who loved him as their own grandfather.

Ronald is survived by his brothers, William and Kathy Harrop Jr. of Granby, MA; David and Robin Harrop of Ludlow, MA; and a niece, Sarah Harrop of Granby, MA.

A private ceremony will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ronald’s name to a veteran’s organization or a local animal shelter of your choice.
