James “Jamie/Jim” Newman II passed away peacefully on May 20, 2020 from complications after a fall at the River Valley Rest Home, Florence, MA.
Jamie was born in Long Beach, California, on September 3, 1950, the first of six children to the late Dorothy (LaBarge) Newman of Leeds and James F. Newman of Northampton, MA.
Jamie was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy Newman. He's survived by his daughter; Jessica (Scott) Halstead, and three grandchildren; Avery, Olivia, and Cameron, five siblings; Melissa (Charles) Miller, Brion (Bobby), Cyrus (Kathy), Todd, and Kathy (Ramona); Uncle Richard (Maryann) LaBarge; and many nieces and nephews. We're eternally grateful for the kindness and compassion the LaBarge cousins showed Jamie over the years, the residents at River Valley Rest Home, and longtime personal physician, Dr Bruce Weinraub for his thoughtful and dedicated care.
Despite the devastating effects of schizophrenia, Jamie's legacy is one of hope. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit and remarkably kind heart. He loved animals, 1970s vintage rock music, western movies (especially Clint Eastwood), Demolition Derby @ Three County Fair, walks in the woods, fishing, pizza, Friday night family suppers, and his daughter and three grandchildren.
Jamie taught us what really matters in life, that people afflicted with mental illnesses be treated with respect and, most importantly - loved. We will miss Jamie beyond measure, but take comfort in knowing he's at peace looking after his mother and for a good fishing hole.
A date for a celebration of life service will be determined at a later date to be announced.
Williamsburg Funeral Home has been entrusted with his cremation. HampshireCremation.com
