Ann Jolly Howard

GREENFIELD, MA — August 21, 1938- April 10, 2021 Ann Jolly Howard was born on August 21, 1938 to the former James Richard and Ruth Jolly. She graduated as the valedictorian of Westwood High School in New Jersey in 1956 and then from Brown University with a Bachelor of Arts. She is predeceased by her husband of fifty years, the late Reverend Stephen Davies Howard. They raised their three children in Greenfield, MA where she was an English Teacher at Greenfield High School for 30 years. She loved sharing her passion for American literature and Film. Skilled at recognizing the talents and strengths in all students, she delighted in supporting their achievement. Proud of the accomplishments of Greenfield High School graduates, she enjoyed following their life successes and careers. Once retired, she volunteered as a tutor of foreign exchange, graduate students and professors in the five college area on the intricacies of mastering English as their second language. She cherished her neighbors in Amherst that fostered a deep sense of community, enabling her to live at home for much of her time. An avid animal lover, she was predeceased by four well-loved family dogs and one cat; Sammy, Conrad, Kelsey, Sweet Pea and Hephzibah. She is survived by her three children Catherine Ann Nicholas of San Diego, CA, Dr. Elisabeth Davies Howard of Providence, RI, and Matthew Anson Howard of Amherst, MA. Her five grandchildren include Casey, Emily, Annelise, Nicole and Jackson. Her Brother and sister-in-law Carl and Beverly Howard reside in Albany, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Greenfield High School or the All Souls Unitarian Church in Greenfield, MA.
