Homer Bissell (1927 - 2018)

June 29, 2018

Homer Bissell, 90, passed away peacefully on June 23rd, in the home in which he'd been born, surrounded by family.  Homer was born on July 31, 1927, the youngest of 7 children to Herbert H. and Mertie E. Bissell and spent his youth on the family's dairy farm.  Homer learned to work on machinery and attended Smith Vocational High School to learn automobile mechanics.  He spent 39 years at Magna Buick in Holyoke, MA working first as a mechanic and his last few years in the customer service department.  During his time at Magna, he won numerous awards for his work.  For the Town of Goshen, he served on the Goshen School Committee, participated in the planning of the Hampshire Regional High School and worked as a police officer for many years.   After retiring from Magna Buick, he worked part-time in the mail room at Motherwear in Northampton. In his 60s with grandchildren coming along, Homer made the decision to pursue his GED which he proudly achieved in their honor.   He began his final career as a volunteer delivering mail at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, a job he loved and held until he was in his late 80s.  Homer served as a deacon in the Goshen Congregational Church for many years and was a member of the Florence Congregational Church.  He leaves behind his wife, Audrey (Thompson) Bissell, recently celebrating 66 years of marriage on June 7th.   3 children: Connie (Bissell) & John Schwaiger of Goshen, Laura (Bissell) & Colin Scott of Buckland, and William and Kristine (Grueling) Bissell of Goshen, 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.   A celebration of his life and love for the Lord will be held at the Florence Congregational Church on July 8th at 2 pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Florence Congregational Church. His cremation was entrusted to the Williamsburg Funeral Home (hampshirecremation.com)
