LAWRENCE M. PORTER

Cummington - Lawrence Milton "Puff" Porter, 93, passed away peacefully April 1, 2017 at home in Cummington. He was born May 9, 1923 in Pittsfield Mass to Leslie and Marion (Pettingill) Porter.

Puff graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1941. He then attended the General Electric Apprentice Drafting School before entering the US Army Air Corps in 1942. He achieved rank of 2nd Lieutenant as a pilot of a B-24 in the 8th Air Force - 392 nd Bomb Group. During WWII his plane was shot down in Hannover Germany on September 11, 1944. He and his crew were captured as Prisoners of War and detained in the Stalag Luft #1 until their liberation on May 15, 1945.

He married Glenora "Glennie" Fryer of Pittsfield on March 16, 1944

After WWII he returned to finish drafting school and worked for the General Electric Company in Pittsfield as a senior designer in the transformer division. He retired in 1985.

He was a member and past trustee of the Village Congregational Church of Cummington. He served as the assessor in Cummington for 21 years.

He enjoyed birding and was a member and past president of the Hoffmann Bird Club of Pittsfield and member and past president of the Caloosa Bird Club of Fort Myers, FL and many other nature organizations.

He was a member of the Worthington Golf Club since 1947 and served as treasurer from 1982- 1985.

For 29 years, Glennie & Puff spent winters in Jamaica Bay community in Fort Myers, FL where they made many friends.

He is predeceased by his wife of 71 years Glenora Porter. He is survived by a daughter Marilou Martin and her husband Larry of Hendersonville, NC; a grandson Scott Martin of Lakewood, CO; a granddaughter Holly Dextraze and her husband Robert Jr. of Cummington; a granddaughter Kimberley Swanda and her husband Wells Jr. of Cummington; and a great grandson Dylan Dextraze of Cummington.

SERVICES: A funeral is planned for Saturday April 8 th at 2:00pm at the Village Congregational Church on Main Street in Cummington. Refreshments will follow in the church vestry. There are no calling hours and a burial service will occur at a later date. The Williamsburg Funeral Home was entrusted with his arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, Donations may be sent to Hospice of Cooley Dickinson, 168 Industrial Drive, Northampton, and MA 01060 or to the Village Congregational Church P.O. Box 76, Main Street Cummington MA 01026.
